Strong oblique shock waves in granular free-surface flows

چکیده

Strong oblique shock waves of granular flow are a steady-state solution formed when free-surface deflects around wedge-shaped obstacle at supercritical speed, but they do not usually occur because their formation requires specific conditions to be satisfied downstream the wave. This paper discusses method generating strong wave in laboratory experiment and numerical simulation. The is conducted on plexiglass chute inclined an angle horizontal, which dry material released from hopper top form channelized that passes wedge downslope location. In order generate wave, second gate established control out only designed time height. Such flowing process simulated with depth-averaged model, where above two-gate system mirrored into inlet outlet boundaries, respectively. investigated through transient field, good agreement observed between Then, interaction weak shocks analyzed result can regarded as third it by just changing opening gate. With dramatic change thickness velocity across shock, bulk inertial number, used quantify rheological relation materials, becomes extremely small, does seem affect behavior discussed this paper.

Weak, strong and detached oblique shocks in gravity-driven granular free-surface flows

Hazardous natural flows such as snow-slab avalanches, debris flows, pyroclastic flows and lahars are part of a much wider class of dense gravity-driven granular freesurface flows that frequently occur in industrial processes as well as in foodstuffs in our kitchens! This paper investigates the formation of oblique granular shocks, when the oncoming flow is deflected by a wall or obstacle in suc...

Shock waves, dead zones and particle-free regions in rapid granular free-surface flows

Shock waves, dead zones and particle-free regions form when a thin surface avalanche of granular material flows around an obstacle or over a change in the bed topography. Understanding and modelling these flows is of considerable practical interest for industrial processes, as well as for the design of defences to protect buildings, structures and people from snow avalanches, debris flows and r...

Erosion–deposition waves in shallow granular free-surface flows

Debris flows can spontaneously develop regular large-amplitude surge waves that are interspersed by periods in which the channel fill is completely stationary. These are important because each individual surge is much more destructive than a steady uniform flow with the same mass flux. In this paper small-scale experiments that exhibit similar behaviour are described. The flow consists of carbo...

Oblique Shock Waves and Shock Reflection ∗ †

Oblique and conical shock waves are generated as solid projectile flies supersonically, or as a planar shock wave is reflected along a ramp. We study the stability of oblique shock waves for full Euler system of equations in gas-dynamics. The stability criterion is applied to the discussion of regular shock reflection phenomena and the transition of a regular shock reflection to Mach reflection.

Uphill solitary waves in granular flows.

We have experimentally observed uphill solitary waves in the surface flow on a granular material. A heap is constructed by injecting sand between two vertical glass plates separated by a distance much larger than the average grain size, with an open boundary. As the heap reaches the open boundary, solitary fluctuations appear on the flowing layer and move "up the hill" (i.e., against the direct...
